As the name suggests, Woodgate Barn is situated on the edge of a wood in the outskirts of Monk Shebourne in Hampshire. Unassuming from the outside, the barn is of significant age and has a traditional wooden frame with tenon-and-mortice joints.
Bat surveys at the barn have confirmed that many of these joints are being used by common pipistrelle bats as a roost site. Other species of bat, such as Natterer's bat and brown long-eared bats were also recorded flying around the barn soon after dusk.
Sadly, the barn has been neglected for several years and the owners have decided to undertake some necessary repairs to ensure that the building remains standing for the foreseeable future. This will include repairs to the wooden frame of the building including the exact locations where the bats are known to be roosting within the tenon-and-mortice joints.
Windrush Ecology Ltd. has been commissioned to undertake bat surveys at the barn and to provide advice and supervision during the repair works. We specialise in surveying historic buildings, such as Woodgate Barn.
